Staggering Impact of Change Controls

I'm amazed at our recent findings related to a survey we conducted with over 330 IT managers.  We looked at over 60 IT control activiteis and 20 performance measure, to see which IT controls impact performance the most.

We will publish the findings in the coming months - but I wanted to share sneak peek that relates to my recent blog topic.

For companies with less than 100 IT employees (~100 companies in our study) just seven of the 60 IT controls correlated with over 60% of the variance in the performanc measures.  This level of correlation is VERY high, and points to a core set of activities that have a significant impact on a wide range of IT performance measures.

However, a single control accounted for over 25% of the variance in the measures.  Wow! That control is "Having defined consequences for intentional, unauthorized change".

Are you suprised that the presence of one IT control has such an impact on performance?
